Baby Registry Items That Were Actually Worth It — Plus What I’d Do Differently

When I made my baby registry, I spent a ton of time trying to figure out what we would actually need.

Some things ended up being exactly as useful as I expected. Some things were way more useful than I realized. And a few things I thought we would use all the time barely got touched.

After two babies, I would definitely build a registry a little differently.

I would worry less about checking every single thing off a traditional baby list and think more about what is actually going to make everyday life easier.

These are the things that were really worth it for us, the things I wish I had more of, and a few things I would skip.

Our Bedside Bassinet

Our bedside bassinet was an absolute must.

Having the baby right next to the bed made nighttime feeds, diaper changes, and checking on him so much easier.

I did not have to fully get up or walk across the room every time he stirred, which made those early weeks feel a lot more manageable.

This is one of those things I would 100% have again.

The Owlet Sock

The Owlet sock was another thing we really valued.

I liked being able to check how things looked without constantly hovering over the baby.

It is definitely not something every family is going to feel like they need, but for us, it gave us extra peace of mind during those early months.

A Baby Monitor With Good Night Vision — and Maybe Two Cameras

I thought a baby monitor was mainly for when the baby was in another room.

I ended up using ours even when I was in the same room.

At night, I could look at the monitor and check on the baby without turning on a light, leaning over the bassinet, or doing anything that might disturb him.

That was honestly one of my favorite uses for it.

I would also think ahead when choosing a monitor. We recently upgraded to a dual-camera setup because our baby sleeps in our room but also plays in the kids’ room.

Now we can watch both areas without moving a camera back and forth.

If you already know you may want two rooms covered later, it is worth thinking about from the beginning.

Alexa-Controlled Bedside Lights

I actually had one of those little cordless lights for middle-of-the-night feeds.

I barely used it.

What we ended up using way more was our regular bedside lamps with Alexa-controlled smart bulbs.

We could turn them on and off hands-free while holding the baby, dim them really low, and even switch the light to red at night.

That worked so much better for us than adding another little gadget to the nightstand.

⭐ Mom Hack: Use a Smart Bulb Instead of Another Baby Gadget

If you already have bedside lamps, a smart bulb gives you hands-free control, dimming, and different light colors without taking up any extra space.

A Good Baby Swing

A good baby swing was another really useful one for us.

Sometimes the baby just wanted movement and soothing, and the swing gave me a few minutes when I needed my hands free.

That could mean eating something, getting one little thing done, or helping my toddler.

Not every baby loves a swing, but if yours does, you will probably be very glad you have it.

A Velcro Swaddle

I highly recommend having at least one Velcro swaddle to try.

One of our babies loved being swaddled and it could basically put her to sleep.

Our other baby really did not need it.

That is a good example of why I would not buy a huge stack before the baby arrives, but I would absolutely have one or two ready.

If your baby likes being swaddled, Velcro makes it so much easier when you are exhausted.

Way More Burp Rags Than You Think You Need

I seriously had no idea how many burp rags we would go through with our first baby.

You think you have plenty, and then somehow there is not a clean one anywhere.

We used them for spit-up, feeding messes, drool, wiping our clothes, protecting the couch, and basically every random baby mess.

This is one of the few baby basics where I would rather have too many than too few.

More Sleepers and Fewer Cute Outfits

This is probably one of the biggest things I would do differently.

Everyone told me not to buy much in newborn sizes because babies grow out of them so fast.

That may be true for some babies, but both of mine stayed in newborn clothes longer than I expected based on that advice.

I actually ended up buying more newborn sleepers after both babies were born.

And honestly, sleepers were what we used most anyway.

My babies barely left the house during those early weeks and I wanted them comfortable.

Cute outfits were fun for pictures or the occasional outing, but most days I was reaching for soft sleepers that were easy for diaper changes, naps, and just hanging out at home.

I would not necessarily add a huge amount of newborn clothes to a registry, but I definitely would not be so afraid of having a few more newborn sleepers on hand.

A Nursing Cover With a Structured Neckline

If you plan to nurse, I would look for a nursing cover with a structured or U-shaped neckline.

That little bit of structure makes a bigger difference than I expected.

It helps keep the fabric off your face, gives you more airflow, and makes it easier to look down and see the baby.

It is one of those tiny details that makes the cover much more comfortable to actually use.

Nursing Bras, Tanks, and Easy-Access Shirts

If you plan to breastfeed, I would also think about what you are actually going to wear.

Regular bras and tops can get annoying really quickly when you are feeding a baby all day and night.

A few comfortable nursing bras, tanks, and easy-access shirts make life a lot easier.

I would focus on soft stuff you can wear around the house and sleep in.

A Hands-Free Breast Pump

If you plan to pump, I would absolutely consider a hands-free pump.

Being tied to one spot every time you pump gets old fast.

Especially if you have another child, being able to move around a little while pumping makes a huge difference.

Even just being able to make food or do something with your hands instead of sitting there stuck is nice.

Extra Bottle Nipples

This is something I did not think enough about ahead of time.

Bottle nipples need to be replaced more often than I realized, and babies may also need different flow levels as they get older.

I would not stock up before knowing which bottle your baby actually likes.

But once you figure that out, having extra nipples around is really helpful.

A Bottle Sterilizer

I actually had a bottle sterilizer and returned it because I thought it was just going to be another big thing sitting on my counter.

I regretted that one.

Once I was constantly washing bottles, nipples, and pump parts, I really wished I had kept it.

I managed without one, but if I were doing it again, I would probably keep it.

A Bottle Warmer or Portable Milk Warmer

This is one I never personally bought, but I can absolutely see why some parents love them.

I did not produce a huge amount of extra milk, and my baby usually just drank what I had pumped, so it never became something we really needed.

But if you are storing a lot of breast milk, formula feeding, or regularly giving bottles away from home, I could see a warmer being really useful.

It is not something I would call a must-have for everyone, but it could be very convenient depending on how you feed your baby.

The Pacifiers Both of Our Babies Liked

Both of our babies loved the Avent pacifiers.

Once we figured that out, I definitely wish we had more of them.

Pacifiers somehow end up everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

I would not buy a huge amount before knowing which kind your baby likes, but once you find a favorite, backups are worth it.

Extra Mattress Protectors

This is not exciting at all, but it is so useful.

Between spit-up, diaper leaks, and random middle-of-the-night messes, extra mattress protectors are one of those boring things you are very glad you have.

I would definitely want more than one.

⭐ Mom Hack: Layer the Crib Mattress

Put a mattress protector and fitted sheet on the mattress, then another mattress protector and fitted sheet on top. If there is a middle-of-the-night mess, you can pull off the top layers and already have a clean sheet underneath.

More Fitted Sheets Than I Thought I Needed

Same with fitted sheets.

You think a couple will be enough.

Then one gets dirty, one is in the laundry, and somehow you are out right when everyone is tired.

I would rather have a few extras sitting in the closet.

A Diaper Caddy for the Main Living Area

Before having kids, I pictured most diaper changes happening at the changing table.

That is definitely not how things worked in our house.

Keeping diapers, wipes, diaper cream, burp rags, and an extra outfit in a small caddy in the main living area saved us from constantly walking back and forth.

If you have a two-story house, I would absolutely keep a setup on each floor.

A&D Ointment and an Applicator

This is one of those super cheap things that we used constantly.

A&D ointment was something we reached for all the time, and having an applicator made it so much less messy.

It is not some big registry must-have, but honestly, these little inexpensive things sometimes end up getting used way more than the bigger baby gear.

A Portable Changing Pad

I knew I needed a diaper bag.

I did not realize how much I would appreciate having a separate foldable changing pad inside it.

We have used ours in public bathrooms, the car, other people’s houses, and plenty of places where I did not want to put the baby directly on the changing surface.

It is small, easy to keep with you, and just makes leaving the house easier.

A Clip-On High Chair

Our clip-on high chair ended up being one of our most-used baby items.

I originally thought of it as something that would be good for restaurants, grandparents’ houses, and trips.

It ended up becoming our everyday high chair at home too.

It takes up less space than a traditional high chair and just works really well for us.

This is one of those things I would absolutely buy again.

A Comfortable Play Mat

I underestimated how much time we would spend on the floor once the baby started doing tummy time, rolling, sitting, and playing.

Having a thick, comfortable play mat gave us a good spot for all of it.

I especially like the wipeable folding mats because they are easy to clean.

The only downside is that the really comfortable ones can be bulky to store, so that is something I would think about ahead of time.

An Electric Nasal Aspirator

The first time our toddler got sick as a baby, we quickly realized how hard it is when a baby is congested and cannot clear their own nose.

We ended up buying an electric nasal aspirator, and I was very glad we did.

I would definitely want one ready before the first cold instead of waiting until the baby is already miserable.

I would also keep saline on hand because the two are really useful together.

A Few Other Sick-Baby Basics

A good thermometer and humidifier are also worth having before you need them.

These are not exciting registry items at all, but the first time your baby feels warm or wakes up congested, you will be glad they are already in the house.

For anything involving medication, I would always follow your pediatrician’s guidance.

More Baby-Safe Laundry and Stain Products

This is something I really underestimated.

Babies are messy.

Between spit-up, blowouts, drool, and eventually food, I feel like I am constantly using stain treatment.

I swear I go through it every other week.

I would definitely think about adding baby-safe laundry detergent, stain treatment, or other gentle laundry products to the registry.

They are not glamorous, but you will probably use them way more than another cute outfit.

Bigger-Ticket Things I Wish We Had Thought Ahead About

There are also a few bigger things I wish we had thought about putting on our registry simply because they are so expensive.

Even if nobody buys the whole thing, these are the kinds of items that would have been nice to have as group gifts or something family could contribute toward.

A Stroller Wagon

We ended up wanting a stroller wagon later, and looking back, I wish we had put one on the registry.

It is definitely not something you need right away with a newborn, but once you have more than one kid, start doing more outings, or just need to haul a ridiculous amount of stuff, they can be so useful.

And they are expensive.

This is one of those things I wish we had thought about beyond just the newborn stage.

Evenflo Revolve360 Extend and Slim Car Seats

We have both the Evenflo Revolve360 Extend and Revolve360 Slim now, and we absolutely love them.

They are so easy to rotate and recline, and being able to turn the seat toward you makes getting a kid in and out so much easier on your back.

They have also been really easy for us to install and move between cars.

We will definitely be getting another rotating seat for the baby once he is out of his infant seat.

Knowing what I know now, if I needed a new infant seat too, I would probably look at Evenflo’s rotating infant option from the beginning.

Car seats get expensive fast, so this is one of those things I wish we had thought further ahead about when making the registry.

A More Compact Stroller for Two Kids

This is another thing I did not really understand until we had two kids.

Our current stroller is amazing. It is smooth, comfortable, and works really well for the kids.

It also takes up basically my entire trunk.

Now that I am regularly trying to fit a baby, toddler, stroller, diaper bag, groceries, and everything else into the car, I really wish I had a more compact two-kid stroller.

I would still want something comfortable enough for both kids, especially one where the baby can recline, but I would pay way more attention to how small it folds and how much trunk space it actually takes up.

That is something I barely thought about when I was shopping for a stroller the first time, and it matters a lot more to me now.

Things I Didn’t End Up Needing

There were also a couple things I thought we would use that really did not work for us.

A Zip-Up Car Seat Cover

I thought one of those car seat covers that zips around the baby would be useful for cooler weather.

For us, it really was not.

We do not live somewhere that gets very cold, so a blanket and a beanie were usually plenty.

If you live somewhere with real winter weather, you may feel completely differently.

But for our climate, I would skip it.

The Cordless Night Light

I really thought our little cordless light would be useful for nighttime feeds and diaper changes.

It basically just sat there.

The Alexa-controlled bulbs in our existing lamps ended up being way more useful.

That is one of those perfect examples of something that sounded great before the baby came but just did not fit into our actual routine.

A Few Things I Wouldn’t Stock Up on Before Baby Arrives

There are some things I would absolutely have enough of to try, but I would not go crazy buying a huge amount right away.

That includes:

  • One specific bottle brand

  • Pacifiers

  • Swaddles

  • Baby soaps or lotions

  • One diaper brand

  • Dressy outfits

Babies have preferences.

One may love being swaddled while another does not care at all.

One pacifier may be a favorite and another gets spit out immediately.

I would rather have enough to try and then buy more once I know what actually works.

What I’d Do Differently If I Made My Registry Again

If I made another baby registry, I would worry less about having the “perfect” registry.

I would think more about what our actual days and nights would look like.

What will make nighttime feeds easier?

What will help me check on the baby without waking him?

What will give me a few minutes with my hands free?

What will I go through way faster than I expect?

What will make feeding, cleaning, or leaving the house easier?

And what can I skip because it just does not fit our lifestyle?

After two babies, I also think it is really easy to overthink all of this.

At the end of the day, if you have the essentials — diapers, wipes, some clothes, a safe place for the baby to sleep, and whatever you need to feed them — you are in pretty good shape.

Everything else is really just there to make life easier.

You do not have to predict every single thing your baby will like before they are even here.

Some of the products we loved were things I did not expect to care about that much, and some of the things I thought we would use constantly barely got touched.

That is probably the biggest thing I know now that I did not know the first time.

You can prepare as much as you want, but a lot of it comes down to your baby, your routine, and what actually makes life easier in your house.
