Our Family Beach Packing List: What We Actually Bring (and Why)
Before kids, packing for the beach was easy—a towel, sunscreen, water, and maybe a snack.
Now, a few hours at the beach somehow requires enough gear to make it feel like we're moving in for the weekend.
After plenty of beach days with a toddler and baby, we've figured out what actually makes the day easier—and just as importantly, what we can leave at home. These are the products and little packing habits that have earned a permanent spot in our beach routine.

The Things We Carry (But Don't Pack in the Beach Bag)
Our Pendleton Folding Blanket
One of my favorite beach items doesn't even go in the beach bag.
Years ago, I bought a Pendleton folding blanket, and it's still one of the first things I grab. It folds into itself and has its own shoulder strap, so I can carry it separately instead of trying to squeeze another bulky item into an already full tote.
It's large enough for our whole family to sit on, comfortable, and has held up incredibly well.
⭐ Mom Hack: Let Bulky Items Carry Themselves
Whenever possible, choose gear that has its own carrying strap or case. Keeping bulky items separate from your beach tote leaves more room for the things you need to grab throughout the day.
A Portable Chair for Our Baby
Since our baby isn't walking yet, we always bring our Pop 'N Sit chair with the tray attachment.
It gives him a clean place to sit, snack, and play while we're getting everything set up. Instead of balancing him on a towel or passing him back and forth, he has his own safe spot.
We've used it at the beach, parks, camping trips, family BBQs, and while traveling. It's one of those purchases that's been worth every penny because we use it so often.
What's Always Inside Our Beach Tote
An XL Mesh Beach Tote
I recently upgraded to an XL mesh beach tote, and I honestly wish I had done it sooner.
Before that, I felt like I was carrying multiple bags because nothing fit together.
Now almost everything fits into one tote—towels, sunscreen, snacks, toys, extra clothes, and all of the little things that come with having young kids.
I also love that the mesh helps shake out a lot of the sand before we even get back to the car.
⭐ Mom Hack: Keep Your Beach Bag Ready to Go
During the summer, I try to keep our beach bag mostly packed. After each trip, I restock what we used so we're ready for the next beach day. It saves time and makes spontaneous trips much easier.
My Favorite Packing Hack: A Refillable Wipes Container
This is probably the simplest thing on this list, but it's one of my favorite packing hacks.
Instead of throwing an entire package of wipes into our beach bag, I use a refillable wipes container and refill it from the large refill packs we keep at home.
It's lighter, takes up much less room, and is so much easier to grab with one hand when someone has sandy feet, sticky fingers, or a face covered in melted snack.
It's a small change, but it makes our beach bag feel so much less bulky.
Snacks in Reusable Containers
I don't know what it is about the beach, but everyone seems extra hungry.
I like packing snacks in reusable containers instead of tossing individual bags into the beach tote. They don't get crushed, they're easy to hand out, and they help keep the bag organized.
Keeping everyone fed is one of the easiest ways to avoid meltdowns.
The Small Things That Save the Day
These aren't the first things people think about when packing for the beach, but I'm always glad we brought them.
Hand Sanitizer
We use it before snacks, after playing, and before getting back into the car.
The beach isn't exactly the cleanest place, so having hand sanitizer within easy reach makes me feel better before everyone starts eating.
Pacifier & Toy Wipes
These have become one of those "never leave home without them" items.
Yes, they're great for pacifiers, but I use them for so much more.
If a favorite toy gets dropped in the sand, a teether falls on the ground, or even a water bottle spout gets dirty, I can quickly wipe it down and move on with our day.
They hardly take up any space, but they've saved us countless times.
⭐ Mom Hack: Keep Your Most-Used Items Within Reach
I keep pacifier wipes in an outside pocket of our beach bag so I don't have to dig for them when a toy, teether, or water bottle ends up in the sand. The easier they are to grab, the more often you'll actually use them.
Toy Tethers
If you have a baby who's constantly dropping toys, don't overlook these.
We clip favorite toys and teethers onto the stroller, chair, or diaper bag so they don't disappear into the sand every few minutes.
It's such a simple product, but it solves a surprisingly frustrating problem.
⭐ Mom Hack: Clip It Before You Need It
I clip toys and teethers onto the stroller or chair before we even leave the house. It saves me from constantly picking them up off the sand, and it means I don't have to remember to do it once we're already juggling everything else.
The Beach Towel I Still Reach For
One of my favorite beach towels actually came from Costco years ago.
It's oversized, incredibly lightweight, dries quickly, and folds down to almost nothing.
I haven't found that exact towel on Amazon, but if I were shopping today, I'd look for a large microfiber towel with those same features.
It's perfect as a main towel or an extra backup because it doesn't take up much room in the beach bag.
⭐ Mom Hack: Choose Towels That Pack Small
I look for oversized microfiber towels because they dry quickly, fold down to almost nothing, and don't take up much room in the beach bag. That leaves more space for the things our family actually needs.
What We've Learned
Every family packs a little differently, and that's okay.
Over time, I've realized that the goal isn't bringing more things—it's bringing the things that solve problems.
For our family, that looks like:
A refillable wipes container instead of a bulky pack.
An XL mesh tote that keeps almost everything in one place.
Toy tethers that keep favorite toys out of the sand.
Pacifier wipes that clean much more than pacifiers.
A compact towel that dries quickly and doesn't take up half the bag.
A portable chair that gives our baby a clean place to sit and snack.
None of these items are flashy, but together they've made our beach days feel much more relaxed.
